Portuguese wind power giant EDP Renovaveis (EDPR) saw its profits increase strongly in 2009The company’s power output for the first quarter grew 28% compared to a year previously.

EDP Renovaveis (EDPR) announced earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) grew by 20% to €184.5m.

The rise in operating profits would have been higher if it had not been for the impact of low winds in the US, where the average load factor decreased by nine percentage points to 31% in the first quarter, according to the firm.

“The low wind resource in the US had an unfavourable top-to-bottom impact in the company’s figures,” says the company’s first quarter results statement.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Duke Energy’s Campbell Hill Windpower Project near Casper, Wyo., is now on line and producing clean, renewable electricity.

The 99-megawatt (MW) Campbell Hill project, located in Converse County, supplies wind energy to PacifiCorp under the terms of a 20-year power purchase agreement. Campbell Hill’s 66 wind turbines produce enough electricity to power approximately 30,000 homes annually.

With Campbell Hill now on line, Duke Energy has 733 MW of wind power in commercial operation. Earlier this year, Duke Energy:

  • Brought its 151-MW Notrees Windpower Project in Ector and Winkler counties, Texas, and 42-MW Silver Sage Windpower Project in Cheyenne, Wyo., on line.
  • Acquired and brought into commercial operation the 70-MW North Allegheny Windpower Project in Blair and Cambria counties, Pa., roughly 95 miles east of Pittsburgh.
  • Committed to build the 51-MW Kit Carson Windpower Project near Burlington, Colo., in 2010.
  • Announced plans to build the 200-MW Top of the World Windpower Project near Casper, Wyo., in 2010.

Last week, Duke Energy received a $22 million U.S. Department of Energy grant that the company will match to design, build and install a large-scale wind power storage solution at its Notrees site in Texas.

“There’s a big difference between talking about combating climate change and actually doing something about it,” said Wouter van Kempen, president of Duke Energy Generation Services, a Duke Energy unit that owns and develops renewable energy assets. “By adding 362 megawatts of wind power in just one year, Duke Energy is showing it’s serious about generating electricity from renewable resources.”
